African Energy Guarantee Facility

The African Energy Guarantee Facility (AEGF) is an initiative of the European Investment Bank. It is part of the support that the EIB pledged to the United Nation’s Sustainable Energy for All (SE4All). EIB has identified African Trade Insurance as its strategic partner, and helped ATI to develop the competencies needed to support SE4All initiatives in ATI member countries.

How it Works

AEGF is not a separate product, but an initiative that provides ATI with access to a large pool of insurance capacity. It enables us to insure important projects that normally would not fall within our capacity.

EIB will issue guarantees to Munich Re, one of the world’s largest and best-rated reinsurers. MunichRe will then reinsure ATI for its SE4All eligible business.

Eligible Projects

Projects that are eligible to benefit from this capacity must meet specific requirements:

  • SE4All eligibility: the project must fall within the criteria set by the EU. In case of doubt, ATI must request approval from EIB or its agents
  • Environmental & social impact assessment: ATI will follow the guidelines of EIB, which may differ slightly from our standard assessment format. The assessment must be approved by EIB or its agents before we can bind
  • Procurement validation: the project, or the part that is considered for insurance, must meet the procurement standards of the European Union. The prospective insured must submit documents that are not a requirement under a standard ATI insurance policy
